[ARCHIVED] 2016 Old Timers Festival

2016 Old Timers Festival logo

The city of La Vergne is excited to announce the 2016 Old Timers Festival, to be held on Saturday September 17, with theme of "Celebrating Our Hometown Heroes." Mr. Vinny Pollizzotto, one of the oldest WWII veterans living in La Vergne, will serve as one of the grand marshals at the parade.

In 1943, Mr. Pollizzotto was about to finish high school in Brooklyn, New York when he and eight friends enlisted instead. He was assigned to the Army Air Corps (what is now the Air Force), and was shipped to the Pacific where he worked with B-29bombers. Out of the nine young men who enlisted, eight survived – one was killed at the Battle of the Bulge. Sixty-two years later, Representative Peter King of Long Island sponsored a bill that would grant high school diplomas to the young men who answered the call to serve their country. Mr. Pollizzotto says, "I am so proud of that diploma! I even hung it on my office wall." La Vergne is honored to have Mr. Vinny Pollizzotto as well as several senior veterans to represent our city at the 2016 Old Timers Festival.

The line-up for the parade will be at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 17 at La Vergne City Hall – the parade will end at Veterans Memorial Park, where we will kick off the day long festival!

In addition, we are excited to announce that our carnival will be back this year! Families will have the opportunity to enjoy carnival rides and games from Wednesday, September 14 through Saturday, September 17. Craft and food vendors will be available. On Saturday, live entertainment will start at 11:30 a.m. Acts featured this year are: Mike Oldham and The Tone Rangers, Zone Status, Animal Educationalist Bob Tarter, Wildfire, and Missy Garnett and the Two Dollar Pistols. Last year, Old Timers Festival brought in over 5,000 people – we are expecting this year’s festival to be even bigger! Please join us as we celebrate La Vergne's Hometown Heroes!
