La Vergne Police officers are preparing to do checks with sex offenders within the city as Halloween approaches.

Officers will be conducting door to door compliance checks to make sure registered sex offenders are following the law. Offenders are not allowed to take children trick-or-treating or dress up in costume. Offenders who are under TDOC supervision are required to be in their homes by 6 p.m., keep their home free of decorations, keep their porch lights off, may not distribute candy or attend any Halloween functions such as festivals.

“While restrictions make people feel safer, there isn’t an increased danger from registered sex offenders at Halloween,” says Sgt. John Eubanks. “LPD performs these checks on a monthly and quarterly basis and are always working to keep our residents safe.”

The biggest safety concern for children on Halloween night is vehicle traffic.
